Dr. Stewart is an epidemiologist who, for the past 25 years, has conducted research on primary care health services and on communication between patients and doctors. She has published numerous articles in Social Science and Medicine, Medical Care, Journal of Family Practice, Family Practice: An International Journal, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Journal of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and the British Medical Journal. She has been particularly active in fostering an international network of teachers and scientists of communication in medicine, and has published, with others, two books on the topic, Communicating with Medical Patients and Patient-Centered Medicine: Transforming the Clinical Method. Dr. Stewart is an Editor of the book Challenges and Solutions in Patient-Centered Care: A casebook and is a Series Editor along with Judith Belle Brown and Thomas R. Freeman of an international series of books applying the patient-centred clinical method. As a leader in the application of a wide variety of research methodologies in primary care, she was part of a team which sponsored five International Symposia and edited five widely used books in a series called Foundations of Primary Care Research. |

Honorary Member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (1991), received a Woman of Distinction Award for London, Ontario (1993), is a recipient of The American Academy on Physician and Patient Award for Outstanding Research (1996), the Dean’s Award of Excellence for Research (2000) and the James Mackenzie medal of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2004). She is President of NAPCRG and holds the Dr. Brian W. Gilbert Canada Research Chair in Primary Health Care. |
